Learn how to assess vitamin D status, identify patients at risk for deficiency, select an appropriate formulation, establish dosing, monitor response, and reduce the risk of excessive supplementation.

This self-paced online vitamin D course provides physicians, nurse practitioners, physician associates, nurses, and functional medicine providers with a structured approach to oral and injectable vitamin D therapy.

The course covers vitamin D physiology, laboratory interpretation, deficiency risk factors, oral and injectable dosing, nutrient interactions, safety monitoring, patient education, clinical documentation, and practice implementation.

Why Healthcare Providers Study Vitamin D Therapy

Vitamin D supports calcium absorption, bone mineralization, muscle function, nerve signaling, and immune activity. Deficiency can contribute to rickets, osteomalacia, bone loss, muscle weakness, and an increased risk of falls and fractures in vulnerable patients.

Low vitamin D levels have also been associated with cardiovascular disease, cancer, depression, cognitive decline, autoimmune conditions, and other chronic illnesses. Association does not prove that supplementation prevents or treats these conditions.

Large clinical trials have not shown that routine vitamin D supplementation prevents invasive cancer or cardiovascular events in generally healthy adults. This course teaches providers how to distinguish established indications from emerging research and unsupported claims.

What You Will Learn

Vitamin D Physiology

Review vitamin D synthesis, absorption, transport, liver and kidney metabolism, vitamin D receptors, calcium and phosphorus regulation, parathyroid hormone, bone health, muscle function, and immune signaling.

Testing and Laboratory Interpretation

Learn how to use serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D as the primary marker of vitamin D status.

Review laboratory ranges, units of measurement, calcium, parathyroid hormone, magnesium, renal function, liver function, and other findings that affect interpretation and treatment planning.

Deficiency Risk Factors

Identify patients at greater risk for low vitamin D, including those with limited sun exposure, darker skin pigmentation, older age, obesity, malabsorption, bariatric surgery, restrictive diets, liver or kidney disease, osteoporosis, and medications that affect vitamin D metabolism.

The course also explains why routine testing of every healthy adult is not always necessary and how to select patients based on clinical risk.

Oral Vitamin D Therapy

Compare vitamin D2 and vitamin D3, daily and intermittent dosing, loading strategies, maintenance therapy, administration with food, adherence, and follow-up testing.

Learn how baseline results, body size, absorption, medications, and treatment goals affect dosing decisions.

Injectable Vitamin D

Review the appropriate role of injectable vitamin D, including situations involving malabsorption, gastrointestinal surgery, difficulty adhering to oral therapy, or an inadequate response to oral supplementation.

Learn injection preparation, administration technique, dosing considerations, documentation, follow-up testing, and patient education.

Combination Therapy and Nutrient Interactions

Examine the relationships among vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, vitamin K, parathyroid hormone, kidney function, and bone metabolism.

Learn when additional evaluation or supplementation is appropriate and why combination products should not be prescribed automatically.

Safety and Toxicity

Review hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, kidney stones, renal injury, soft-tissue calcification, gastrointestinal symptoms, confusion, weakness, and other signs of excessive vitamin D exposure.

Learn which medications and medical conditions require added caution, including granulomatous disease, hyperparathyroidism, kidney disease, thiazide diuretics, and high calcium intake.

Monitoring and Dose Adjustment

Develop a follow-up plan based on the patient’s baseline level, dose, formulation, clinical risk, kidney function, calcium status, adherence, and response.

Learn when to continue, reduce, hold, or discontinue treatment and when further evaluation is needed.

Vitamin D and Chronic Disease Research

Review the evidence involving vitamin D and immune health, cardiovascular disease, cancer, mood, cognition, metabolic health, and other chronic conditions.

The course separates observational associations from randomized clinical trial findings so providers can discuss the research accurately.

Clinical Protocols and Case Studies

Apply testing, dosing, monitoring, and safety principles to common patient scenarios. Cases address low vitamin D, obesity, malabsorption, osteoporosis risk, inadequate response to oral therapy, excessive supplementation, and injectable treatment.

Patient Education and Adherence

Learn how to explain laboratory results, treatment goals, dosing schedules, dietary sources, sun exposure, follow-up testing, and safety precautions in understandable language.

Practice Implementation

Learn how to incorporate vitamin D evaluation, oral treatment, injections, follow-up testing, and patient education into an existing functional medicine or wellness practice.

The course also reviews pricing, supply costs, appointment structure, documentation, and ethical marketing without relying on disease-prevention promises.
